About the opportunity

From the moment you join Alcoa’s Graduate Program, you will be given the opportunity of a permanent career that will take you far and beyond what you’ve ever imagined, setting you on a career path to contribute to a more sustainable world. You will grow professionally, expand technically and become part of our community where you will be inspired and challenged daily.

With best-in-class bauxite mining and rehabilitation practices, the lowest-carbon alumina refining system on the planet, game-changing innovations in aluminium smelting, and the industry’s most comprehensive portfolio of low-carbon products, Alcoa is working to reinvent the aluminium industry for a sustainable future, and we want you to join us!

All of Alcoa’s graduate positions are permanent and commence with a three-year rotational program, designed to provide you a broad foundation in electrical engineering as well as allow you to tailor your career path towards your interests and individual goals.

Throughout the program, you will be provided with coaching, mentoring, and hands-on and professional training to accelerate your development and maximise your full potential. The best part is that your experience will be diverse; from working in our corporate offices as part of our Global Asset Management team, to a local on-site environment within our 2 mine sites, 3 powerhouses and 3 alumina refineries. All this whilst enjoying a lifestyle where you can be home each and every night!  There is even an opportunity to rotate to our Portland aluminium smelter in Victoria.

You will be exposed to numerous networking opportunities and be provided with an increasing level of responsibility where you will use your innovative thinking, motivation to learn and passion for growth to make an impact on our business. You will join an open-minded workplace where your ideas will be valued whilst developing professionally in a supportive environment that will encourage you to think outside the box.

As a Graduate Electrical Engineer at Alcoa, you will rotate across our WA locations based in the Kwinana, Peel and Upper Southwest regions to learn and develop your experience and expertise in:

A range of electrical, instrumentation, control and power distribution equipment spanning mining, refining and materials handling.
Solving complex problems and implementing improvements as part of a team.

  • Building positive working relationships with a wide range of site personnel across our professional and operational teams to achieve strategic business goals.
  • Fostering change and innovation to support the achievement of cost reduction and productivity improvement opportunities.
  • Providing support in the design, construction, operation and maintenance of refinery equipment by applying engineering principles and strong communication skills.

About you

To be successful in this role and to play a part in our ongoing success you will be:

  • On the path to graduate by the end of 2023 or have recently completed tertiary qualifications in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, meeting the requirements of a Professional Engineering qualification.
  • A self-starter with the ability to work autonomously.
  • Using your initiative and taking ownership of your work.
  • A strong communicator with well-developed people skills.
  • Analytical and open-minded with a creative and collaborative approach to problem-solving.
  • Driving positive outcomes with your ability to engage with and understand your customers.

I enjoy monitoring the process in my area and optimising where I can. Often little things have high impact when fixed or implemented which I enjoy.

Good mix of long-term projects and day to day work. Site exposure allows for more hands-on work experience and implementation of ideas.

My current role sees me responsible for all engineering in an integral part of the refining process. Ensuring equipment is adequately maintained, creating solutions to problems that arise, and looking at future improvements.

Pros and cons of working at Alcoa Australia

Pros

  • Getting to rotate between different roles and experience different parts of the company.

  • Training and career development Great support structure Flexible working arrangements.

  • Leisure days off are a great perk.

  • I like the flexibility to work from home twice per week, and the ability to flex hours based on commitments if needed.

  • The variety of work keeps things interesting and engaging.

Cons

    • The lack of structure and care for the Graduate Program. Especially with no emphasis to the managers/supervisors to set a mentor and a training schedule.

    • Sometimes it feels like you're just a number.

    • Old systems and technology used.

    • The offices need upgrading as well as the equipment in the offices.

    • The business promotes inclusion, but they continue to hire and promote people in the business whose values do not align with the message they are trying to convey.
