Pros and cons of working at Australia Post

Pros

  • I enjoy working with my colleagues - there's a great culture and I feel like I am a value-adding and respected member of the team. Managers are also very supportive and accommodating when it comes to personal needs e.g. development, hybrid working, etc.

  • The people and the teams I've worked with are great. I have formed some great friendships, some that have continued outside of the office.

  • The culture and the people. There are some really fantastic people that work here that you can learn so much from. It makes for a really welcoming work environment, even whilst working remotely. There is also a really strong value of safety that encompasses not only physical safety but psychological safety. This is a top-down attitude that makes me feel like I can genuinely trust my coworkers and raise issues and know that they will actually be actioned.

  • The people and the culture are my favourite thing about working here. The company really lives its values from the top down and has developed a fantastic work culture. There is also a strong emphasis on safety, both physical and psychological which has had a really positive impact on the way seniors interact with employees.

  • The best parts of working at Australia Post include the strong support system - we have dedicated graduate and line managers, plus mentors at different levels. People are always happy to help, and the culture is overall quite positive. As a graduate, I am empowered to take on a number of complex and diverse tasks, and have had the opportunity to drive engagement with customers. It's also great to be able to incorporate work with facility visits to see the heart of Australia Post's operations.

Cons

    • The size, scale and age of the organisation means learning the ropes is a difficult process. There is a labyrinth of different processes and databases, all with different owners, so often work can be a tedious process.

    • It is a large organisation so progress on tasks/initiatives can be slow

    • I would say that there is sometimes where you feel like you aren't really providing a lot of insight into a team and also feel like your not contributing a whole lot it might just be more quiet days or weeks but when its quiet you do feel like you could be doing more.

    • Operating rhythms can be on the slow slide, because decisions usually require senior approval.

    • The only negative that I would mention is that our grad program only allows for us to rotate within our business unit, and this in some ways limits the scope for us to see and work in other parts of the business that may be of interest. However, in some ways this is also a benefit as it allows us to specialise in the work of one unit, and carry this knowledge throughout the different rotations.
