Your role: 

As a Maritime Warfare Officer, you’ll take responsibility for the ship during each watch you keep. You will hold watches onboard the Navy's fleet units, including ships such as Patrol Boats, Frigates and Destroyers, and make decisions to direct the crew on the bridge of the ship. You will also contribute to the ship's warfare and tactical operations, assisting in identifying advancing aircraft and vessels, and positioning to enable use of weapons.

You’ll be paid from day one to gain all the skills needed with extensive on-the-job training. If you are currently studying at uni, you may be able to earn a salary, receive subsidised housing and get your uni fees covered through a Defence University Sponsorship.  

Your duties include, but are not limited to: 

  • Bridgemanship and navigation skills 
  • Accountability for the safety of the ship 
  • Understanding and use of machinery and the propulsion plant 
  • Launching and recovering of the ship’s boats and aircraft 
  • Contributing to whole ship warfare activities 
  • Assisting in identifying advancing aircraft, submarines, and other warships 
  • Warfare tactics, including evasive ship handling manoeuvres 
  • Monitoring of ship safety during live weapons firings

Salary:  

When you first join the Navy and while studying for your degree at the university of your choice, you will be paid between $35,326 and $54,166 depending on your year of study.  

Upon completion of your initial military and employment training, you’ll enjoy a salary package starting from $80,857.

For this role, you must be over 17 at time of enlistment, an Australian Citizen, have completed Year 12 and obtained a high enough entrance rank to qualify. 

To get sponsored to finish your degree you must have completed at least one year of an appropriate degree and have no more than three years of full time study outstanding to complete your degree.
