I think the agency has gone above and beyond to provide development opportunities for me.
Graduate, Canberra - 26 Nov 2024
There has been a graduate development program that has been run by the APSC, but other than that most of the learning provided has been on the job training and self-learning exercises that have been recommended by staff within the team.

GDP has been mediocre but I have found value in the in-person events and some of the speakers and topics during that training. The digital training was again quite mediocre but easy to get through but didnt gain anything from that. However, theres always opportunity to develop for example I have enrolled in a stakeholder engagement course, and had the opportunity to attend the A11y Camp.

There has been some mandatory training, but not much. Most of the formal training I have done has been external. On the job training has led to me gaining many skills in my area and occasionally surrounding areas.

I have not yet undertaken any formal training apart from the graduate program which was run externally to the agency and the mandatory training for all APS employees. Informally I have learned many skills on the job, including data analysis, minutes taking and secretariat function.

The training was pretty standard and the development program are hosted by the APSC so it is not my company running it.

The formal induction process differs from branch to branch. DTA doesn't really offer a standard onboarding process, and it is left to the areas they are joining to get new starters up to speed. The efficiency of the onboarding process is all up to those branches. Perhaps if DTA ensures that every branch has a new starters induction plan, then the onboarding experience can be standardised.

I'm lucky that I've been able to attend relevant training since I've started this role but funding can be an issue at times.

I think more budget needs to be allocated to training, especially for the technical ones.
