What to expect
At Baker McKenzie, we understand that the transition from university to legal practice can be challenging. We provide our summer clerks with a comprehensive induction program, with legal, technical, and soft-skills training sessions, to help make this transition as smooth as possible. Our training program is designed to help you get the most out of your clerkship and set yourself up for success.
We consult with our clerks before they commence to understand the areas of practice in which they are interested in gaining experience. We structure our summer clerks' rotations according to these preferences, where possible.
In Sydney, our key practice groups are:
- Banking & Finance;
- Corporate (including Mergers & Acquisitions, Private Equity and Capital Markets);
- Commercial Real Estate;
- Construction;
- Dispute Resolution & Litigation;
- Employment & Industrial Relations;
- Energy Resources Infrastructure & Corporate;
- Intellectual Property;
- Media;
- Tax; and
- Technology Communications & Commercial.
Most importantly, as a summer clerk, we want you to experience what life is like as a graduate and junior lawyer at Baker McKenzie. So, right from the start, our summer clerks get involved in real work. You will be exposed to our Australian and international clients through client meetings, shadowing, research, and other everyday activities within your assigned practice group. You will also have the opportunity to participate in pro bono files and community service initiatives.
Our summer clerks work closely with our lawyers, are guided by a supervising partner, and enjoy the extra support of an experienced associate “buddy”. With the Firm's strong focus on supporting its people to learn, grow, and achieve better results, you can expect to be well-led, well-coached, and well-mentored.
You will develop practical and legal skills through our dedicated clerkship program and by attending Firm-wide/practice group sessions. Throughout the clerkship, our partners and associates run professional development sessions. These sessions will give you the chance to (amongst other things):
- build your network within the Firm;
- develop your legal and commercial skills;
- learn about our practices, clients, and Firm structure;
- learn about our Pro Bono program, Community Service initiatives Inclusion & Diversity areas; and
- hear about our global training and work opportunities.
We will also provide you with opportunities to network with colleagues around the Firm – through our 'speed networking' program and various social events with your buddy, our partners, and our lawyers.
The majority of our graduate positions are offered to former summer clerks. We also offer our former summer clerks the opportunity to undertake paralegal roles with the Firm.

Reviews
I get the opportunity to take carriage of matters and so my 'day-to-day' responsibilities depend on the lifecycle of the projects which I am working on. This can involve correspondence with different parties, drafting and negotiating contracts, or working through problem solving exercises.
The work at Bakers is super hands on for a junior. I am in client meetings, mediations, court, etc. I have direct access to clients and partners which is fantastic for my development and exposure.
The type of work you do as a graduate varies based on the team that you are in. Generally though, as a consequence of being able to work closely with senior members of the team, graduates are given substantial ability to be involved in a matter. This can be from doing the first review or drafting of documents to being able to input and be a part of broader strategic meetings.

Pros
Getting to work with intelligent, thoughtful, kind and interesting people every day. The Firm is large enough that as a junior you get to work on interesting matters for key global clients, but small enough in terms of numbers in our Australian offices that you feel part of a family and get to know everyone and their areas of specialty well.
The culture of down to earth and kind people who are genuinely interested in investing in your learning and development. Everyone you work with is a genuine, good person, who makes time to give instructions and takes an interest in who you are and how you are (from a wellbeing perspective). The office is social, bubbly and happy. The work is fascinating with our breadth of international and domestic clients.

Cons
The tech issues can sometimes be a bit frustrating to deal with.
There have been some days where I will have to work long hours - though, this does not happen very often.
As a junior, it can be hard to control your workflow, sometimes resulting in longer hours than anticipated.
The global opportunities to work and travel can be competitive (and are from lawyer level upwards). But what you lack in that physical-global engagement, you gain in the sheer exposure to global matters and clients and working with colleagues from different offices, all while never leaving your home office.
The worst thing about working at Baker McKenzie is probably how lean some teams can be. This means that sometimes, towards the end of a project, you can find yourself working very long hours. However, the upside to this is that you develop very quickly and you accelerate your skills and experience.
