Please tell us about promotion possibilities and fill us in on what it takes to move up the ranks.
I feel a bit indifferent on this as it is not very clear to me atm.
Graduate, Melbourne - 30 Oct 2023
Our roles are graded based on alphabetical letters where highest is A and lowest in corporate roles (as opposed to retail roles) is J (which are graduates). I believe promotions are slowing down as we restructured back in 2020 and the organisational structure is more top-heavy so it would take the higher grade people retiring or moving to another company for the spot to open up. I believe promotions between levels happen every 2-3 years.

Very difficult at BP in Australia. The organisational structure is flat and lean.

Flat structure but good people get jobs

They love grads. There's almost an expectation of advancement. They have several programs throughout careers to develop all staff, not just grads.
Graduate, Melbourne - 24 May 2017
Smaller company structure means fewer opportunities to move up quickly.
Graduate, Perth - 22 May 2017
Not completely sure at this stage but there appears to be leadership pathways for talented individuals.
Graduate, Melbourne - 22 May 2017
Graduate program consists of three year-long rotations with the third rotation in a "real" business role (still part of the program for transition support). Graduate program is part of a pipeline of talent programs which identify and prioritise individuals for career progression. Promotion is lattice style (not linear) and based on role availability and potential. Participation in a talent program can limit opportunity in terms of taking roles that are off the individual's projected career path. International mobility facilitated.

It is a slow process and often the opportunity will only arise if there is a vacancy due to a move in higher level roles.
Graduate, Perth - 19 May 2017
It is easier at the lower levels but quickly becomes harder as you progress to the more senior levels where there are fewer positions. Because so many people have worked here a long time and had diverse roles across the company during that time, it is hard to progress beyond a certain level unless you have many, many years’ experience. On the plus side, this culture also gives you the opportunity to try multiple roles and career areas whilst staying with the same company.

Opportunities are endless within BP.
Entry level, Melbourne - 13 Jan 2015
I wouldn't say it is easy to move up the ranks, but if you are a consistent performer who is driven to succeed you will get there.
Graduate, Perth - 12 Jan 2015
Promotion is possible, and is largely has to be driven personally. Generally it helps to take on a variety of roles (get rotated) and experience first. It can take a number of years for a graduate trainee to receive their first promotion
Entry level, Perth - 12 Jan 2015
Career progression is achievable within the company. It is encouraged to move around and gain experience in various departments.
Graduate, Melbourne - 12 Jan 2015
At this stage, it seems like there is brilliant career progression with BP, however being at an early career stage, it is hard to tell if this is actually the case in practise - that will come with time.
Graduate, Brisbane - 12 Jan 2015
For engineers the career progression is slow- it takes at least 5-6 years to earn a management level position.
Graduate, Melbourne - 11 Jan 2015
Careers naturally progress up the ranks but there is little opportunity to jump "levels" even if you are well suited to the role.
Graduate, Melbourne - 11 Jan 2015
Having just received my first promotion, it was as easy as applying for another job. I received this role by having to interview like every other applicant.
Midlevel, Sydney - 11 Jan 2015
Haven't been around long enough to speak much to this, but I've certainly been given plenty of opportunities to learn different areas and develop different skills. I'm about to embark on my first major role change, and am optimistic about my future with the company.
