Danbee An

I’m having a lot of fun with this immersive design project. It’s super engaging for me as I get to multitask and work across different mediums.

6.00 AM

This is when I get out of bed and start my morning. I skip breakfast in order to squeeze a few more snoozes on my alarm. I leave the house at 6.30 am and carpool to work. This is the struggle of living far from the city, although work from home days in the suburbs are always nice and peaceful.

7.30 AM

After fighting the long traffic and arriving in the city, I make my way over to a café next to our office and order myself an iced oat latte. This is like my go-to pre workout drink for my morning routine. I head over to the Pilates studio close to our office and start my morning workout with some friendly work neighbours. After my workout I head over to the showers in our building and get myself prepared to start my day of work.

9.00 AM

I take the lift to level 3, as I can’t feel my legs after pilates. I set myself at my usual spot and caught up with friends sitting nearby. We don’t have allocated seating, but everyone likes to sit at their usual spot. After catching up with my peers’ weekends, I sip on my melting iced coffee as I go through my emails and check my calendar to see when I have meetings today.

9.30 AM

My first meeting of the day is a stand up with our internal project team to discuss what we’ve been working on, any blockers, and what we will be working on today.

Meeting

Our stand ups are quick and informal, it’s just allocated time to bring everyone on the same page.

Meeting

10.00 AM

This is a good time to really get my head into some work. Sometimes I like to go into a booth to focus harder. When I have a lot of work to do, I like to grab some post-it notes from our storage room, write down my to-do’s in small chunks and stick them to my monitor. I’m working on an immersive design project where we’re creating a digital playground for a client. I’m busy sketching ideas on my iPad and when I’m sketching, time flies like crazy.

11.00 AM

I’m having a lot of fun with this immersive design project. It’s super engaging for me as I get to multitask and work across different mediums. Now I’m working away in Figma, designing some concepts and flows. I don’t normally spend a lot of time working on one thing so I’m moving on to design some animations.

12.30 PM

And it’s already time for lunch! I gather a few friends sitting by my desk and we go down to the cafeteria to heat our packed lunches. We carefully carry our hot food in the lift and set ourselves up with our team on third floor. Our team usually eat lunch together and we catch up on our personal lives! TV shows, new cafes, memes, shopping deals, and much more non-related to work stuff.

Gather friends

After eating, I go down to the café in our building with friends for a quick coffee, and we always quarrel over the counter to shout each other a drink. We feel like our mums every time we do this, but it seems to keep our friendships going strong. We work hybrid so in-person interactions are sparse. So when we do see each other, we tend to make the most out of our in-person social interactions.

Coffee

2.00 PM

After fighting the food coma, I jump in an uber with some technical members of the current immersive design project over to LG to test some of our concepts on the actual sized screens. It’s a lot of fun seeing the work we created start to come to life. After testing the designs on screen I create a list of feedback for myself and the team to make the most out of the time I’m there. I make sure to document photos and videos of the screens in test.

3.30 PM

I have a quick catch up with our developer for this project and we discuss and test technical capabilities. This project requires a lot of learning and so most of these sessions are for us to solve problems together and its always so accomplishing to find a solution.

Catch up

4.30 PM

I have a casual check-in with my manager to discuss how things are going and if I need support in any areas of my work. Other than that, we discuss how life has been, and any exciting upcoming trips we have. Because my manager is also a designer, we enjoy chatting about the latest exhibitions and conferences, cool inspo we picked up over the weekend, sneakers, new fonts, etc. it’s chill.

5.00 PM

I pack up my belongings and chuck my dirty cups into the dishwasher after a quick rinse. Then I say goodbye to my peers as I make my way out of the building. I go for a nice relaxing stroll around Wynyard Quarter up to my car and begin making my way out of the city.

6.00 PM

I am stuck in traffic but I’m blasting Charli XCX’s new album, so the drive isn’t as bad as usual.  Driving home is nice alone time for me to debrief about my day and plan for tomorrow. I also get to plan out what to make for dinner.

6.30 PM

I get home and jump straight into the shower.
