By understanding what you need for the job, you also get knowledge on how the job is supposed to be done and what are the qualifications in order for you to succeed in the job.

What's your job about?

Edukasyon.ph is the largest EdTech platform in the Philippines, that helps 8 million Gen Z Filipino learners to search and access schools, scholarships, online courses and other learning resources.

At Edukasyon, I’m working as a Recruitment Manager that oversees the end-to-end recruitment process. This includes drafting and posting job descriptions, sourcing and interviewing candidates, coordinating the interview schedule with the hiring manager and management, drafting contracts/offer letters, and onboarding new hires.

Being a recruiter, you get to face many challenges on a daily basis and you have to be resilient and prepared to face these hurdles. The life of a recruiter consists of relationship-building and nurturing candidates in order for you to create a great candidate experience, and that’s the most important responsibility as a recruiter. You have to make sure that each and every candidate gets to be treated equally, and make them happy by the end of their application journey.

One project that I’m involved with is the onboarding session of candidates. Now that the industries are shifting to a more digital setup, I was tasked to create a fun and exciting virtual onboarding experience that will allow the new hires to feel the culture of our company without the physical human interaction. That’s the life of a recruiter, it may be challenging, but at the end of the day, there’s the satisfying feeling that you get to offer candidates better opportunities.

What's your background?

I was born here in the Philippines and I studied at three different schools for each level of my education, Morning Dew Montessori (elementary), College of San Benildo-Rizal (high school), and De La Salle-College of St. Benilde (college).

To highlight my college journey, I took up a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Major in Human Resources Management in Benilde. If you were to ask me if this was my dream career/course, I would probably say no. Honestly, I entered this course not knowing what career track it might lead me. Originally, I really wanted to take up Psychology, however, when I was doing my research I saw that most of the career tracks for Psych majors would lead to HR or a counselor. On top of that when I took up my entrance exam in Benilde, they did not offer a Psychology course, so I figured, maybe HR is still aligned since it’s part of their career track. And I was wrong, HR is really different from Psychology. But I found a new purpose in the course that I took and embraced it as my career. Now, I’m two years into my career in HR, particularly in recruitment.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes, because recruitment is part of the organization whether you’re in a managerial position or even c-level. As long as you have a clear understanding of the job qualification, you can be a recruiter. Although I believe, all skills can be learned regardless of your background, so the most important thing about recruitment is your attitude. Qualities to have as a recruiter are interpersonal skills and seeing the potential in the talent. Remember, being a recruiter is not just for filling vacancies, but also to provide better career opportunities to people and help them grow professionally.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

The coolest thing about recruitment is you get to have a glimpse of different roles within the organization. By understanding what you need for the job, you also get knowledge on how the job is supposed to be done and what are the qualifications in order for you to succeed in the job. In addition to this, you get to meet different people and build your network. Keep in mind, every candidate you meet matters, even though they’re not a good fit, for now, it does not mean that you won’t get to provide opportunities for them in the future.

What are the limitations of your job?

The biggest limitation of recruitment is the process of getting candidates because you have to source x no. of candidates just to hire the one person that fits the job. It’s really time-consuming and you need to ensure that you’re consistent and creative in finding talents.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Don’t be afraid to change your major, it’s never too late to pursue what you want, regardless of what you’ve started, there’s always time to explore other opportunities.
  • Take your time learning, attached to my first advice, just make sure you’re not rushing into passing that subject. Make sure that you learn all the right values the subject is teaching you.
  • Join an org. Organization life matters because subjects would help you understand the textbook knowledge of your job, but org life would teach you soft skills, which is an important skill to build as a fresh grad.
