Leadership is both a position of power and a position of servanthood. The best leaders I’ve known recognise that the second one is most important.

What's your job about?

I am currently working as part of the mobile banking team in a global bank.

My role as a Business Analyst involves working with various stakeholders to help identify and build both the business and technical requirements needed to deliver new or improved mobile app features for customers.

My daily tasks involve meeting with developers, business leads and other subject matter experts to build team knowledge, writing user stories to frame new app features, and helping to verify projects before they are released to customers.
The basis of all the work I do is collaboration. Regardless of what a day could look like, I always know that I will need to confer with someone in order for me to carry out my role.

What's your background?

I grew up – and still live – in Sydney, Australia. As a kid, I had an interest in almost everything I could read about. I enjoyed science and history in school and those interests definitely stuck around when I got to the later years of high school, coupled with a growing interest in studying or understanding ‘people’.

This led me to pursue a major in Anthropology at university and I never once regretted my decision. It makes for a good conversation starter too because it always generates the same response – “What is Anthropology?”. Prior to me becoming a Business Analyst, I had almost exclusively worked in customer service roles. I worked at an indoor playland for a few years, and in retail as well. I also worked in an insurance call centre as my first corporate job out of university. In addition, I have volunteered with kids on the weekend for the past 5+ years! Altogether, I think that each of these activities helped to shape how I interact with others as both a service provider and as a team member.

Overall, becoming a Business Analyst has been my most interesting and rewarding experience so far. I’ve just barely hit my second month and I am still so excited to see how far I can go.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

As someone who doesn’t come from a business/finance/STEM academic background, I will definitely say yes. While my 10 weeks of training laid an excellent foundation for me to become a Business Analyst, so much of what I do now has been an on-the-job learning experience. You learn and figure things out on the go and, as long as you are willing to be teachable, adaptable and confident, you have the potential to go far.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

Because I’m constantly talking with UX designers and product managers on one side, and developers on the other, I love being able to learn more about designing a customer experience and making it a reality with technology. When I get to see the projects that we are working on go from designs to functional app features, I am reminded that what I do is not insignificant.

What are the limitations of your job?

Over the years, I have learnt to put a high premium on my own mental and physical health and this is front of mind whenever I work. I will admit that there is a lot of responsibility and I have had to force myself to become more confident in my knowledge in a much shorter time than I have in the past. While I know that working into the evening or on weekends may be required, I can keep that to an absolute minimum if I can help myself do as much as I possibly can during the week.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  1. Don’t take things too personally if it’s something you cannot control.
  2. You only know what you know – but so does everyone else. Humility can go a long way in the pursuit of knowledge and it’s important to recognise the (right) kind of people who can help you grow.
  3. Leadership is both a position of power and a position of servanthood. The best leaders I’ve known recognise that the second one is most important.
