Clerkships give you a clearer picture of what it's like to be a lawyer at King & Wood Mallesons. You'll get to know our people, the way we like to work, our culture, practice areas, clients and much more. For many, the clerkship experience is the first career step in their future career in law.

How it works:

We've designed a program to help you make the most of your time with us. During your clerkship, you'll learn:

  • The day-to-day skills to get you started – taking instructions, drafting memos and documents, managing your practice and professional relationships.
  • The core practice teams at King & Wood Mallesons – who they are, what they do, how they're structured, the clients they work for.
  • Our culture – working within your team, you'll be exposed to (and encouraged) to gain an insight into our unique culture.
  • Our people – you'll find that people from every part of the business will help you along, sharing their knowledge, and ensuring you have everything you need to fit in and do well.

To be eligible to apply for our clerkship program, you must be an Australian citizen, or permanent resident or hold, or be able to obtain, all other approvals necessary for you to work for the firm in Australia for the clerkship and the graduate program. By submitting an application, you confirm that you meet, or are reasonably able to meet, the eligibility requirements.

We do accept and welcome applications for the King & Wood Mallesons clerkship program from international students in their penultimate year of their Australian or New Zealand law degree, provided that you have unrestricted legal rights to work in Australia when you commence your clerkship and you are able to apply for a visa to continue to work unrestricted in Australia upon graduation. Graduates are responsible for independently obtaining the correct visa.

Academic Transcripts

We understand some universities will not release academics for Semester 1 until close to the application deadline. For those students, we ask that you hold off submitting your application until you receive your academics (and before the application deadline), if possible. Please note you can still commence your application and save and continue later.

If your university will not be releasing academic results until after applications have closed, please submit your application with your most up-to-date academics that you have at the time. If you are invited to a first interview, please bring a hard copy of your latest official transcript for us to sight. Please note there is no need to email through your transcript after the closing date for applications.

As a grad in my first rotation, the first few weeks are full of lots of training sessions. The work I do depends largely on those more superior to me giving me tasks - these would typically involve legal research, reviewing documents and managing different work streams in a matter.

My day-to-day responsibilities include reviewing documents, legal research, editing documents, corresponding with clients and matter administration.

Pros and cons of working at King & Wood Mallesons

Pros

  • KWM has a strong culture, both within teams and as an organisation. There are many opportunities to socialise at both levels, and the teams in which I have worked have been tight- knit.

  • The level of training and support - you feel very well connected and resourced to be able to learn.

  • I have observed many opportunities for career progression at KWM. Those who demonstrate diligence, hard work and commitment are rewarded.

  • Very flexible. No issue at all. Very accommodating.

  • We get free corporate gym membership, after hours transport/dinner, and can swap pay for leave.

Cons

    • It is challenging to constantly try and perform at a high level.

    • In the morning, you're never quite sure if it's going to be a busy day.

    • While better than other firms at this from what I've heard, culture can be team-dependent.

    • As a junior the most difficult part is figuring out what practice area or team you want to join.

    • Fluctuating hours... work always comes first.
