About the opportunity

Our Finance Graduate Program aims to provide an exceptional experience and provide you with the tools for successful career in Finance.  Building on the experience gained from our successful legal Graduate’s Program, the Finance Graduate Program promotes and supports an integrated approach to learning and development.  Graduates build capability through a range of “formal” and “informal” learning experiences, ranging from day-to-day work activities, through to more traditional face-to-face learning programs.  We will also provide you with a CA/CPA qualified mentor to support you through your professional accounting qualification.

Graduates will gain on the job experience by rotating through different areas within our Finance Team to provide a strong understanding of various facets of KWM finance.  This will include a number of shorter rotations in the operational areas of the Finance Team and more substantial exposure to the Financial and Management accounting teams.  You will gain an understanding of how our strong Finance Team contributes to the wider success of our firm.

During the program you can expect to be involved with:

  • Observing and “on the job” learning in relation to all finance matters including financial accounting, matter accounting, financial planning and analysis, treasury, accounts payable and accounts receivable.
  • Assisting in the preparation of monthly reports and reconciliations
  • Assisting in the preparation and analysis of the financial statements and reports to accurately reflect the group’s financial results.
  • Assisting in the preparation of the monthly management reports including commentary and variance analysis and assisting in the budget and forecast process.
  • Gathering and analysing financial information on cost, pricing, expenses and revenue
  • Participating in finance and operational projects
  • Attending relevant internal training sessions, team meetings and other firm information sessions
  • Developing an in-depth knowledge of the Finance department and wider firm
  • Proactively seeking work from your supervisor and the wider finance team
  • Keeping up to date with industry related issues and developments to enhance personal performance/development
  • Opportunities to improve finance processes for the future
  • Building relationships across all groups and teams, looking for ways to cross-skill and collaborate.

What qualifications and skills are we looking for?

  • Business related degree (including Accounting, Commerce or Economics) with a minimum credit/B average, completed between January 2021 and January 2023
  • Enrolled in the Australian CA/CPA program commencing in 2022 or looking to commence in early 2023

We’ll also expect you to be curious to learn with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

You’ll want to get involved, roll up your sleeves and really immerse yourself in the learning and experience on offer.  You’ll be calm under pressure, able to prioritise and have a strong client service attitude.  It goes without saying that you have strong numerical skills and are proficient in using Microsoft Office software.

As a grad in my first rotation, the first few weeks are full of lots of training sessions. The work I do depends largely on those more superior to me giving me tasks - these would typically involve legal research, reviewing documents and managing different work streams in a matter.

Pros and cons of working at King & Wood Mallesons

Pros

  • KWM has a strong culture, both within teams and as an organisation. There are many opportunities to socialise at both levels, and the teams in which I have worked have been tight- knit.

  • The level of training and support - you feel very well connected and resourced to be able to learn.

  • I have observed many opportunities for career progression at KWM. Those who demonstrate diligence, hard work and commitment are rewarded.

  • Very flexible. No issue at all. Very accommodating.

  • We get free corporate gym membership, after hours transport/dinner, and can swap pay for leave.

Cons

    • It is challenging to constantly try and perform at a high level.

    • In the morning, you're never quite sure if it's going to be a busy day.

    • While better than other firms at this from what I've heard, culture can be team-dependent.

    • As a junior the most difficult part is figuring out what practice area or team you want to join.

    • Fluctuating hours... work always comes first.
