Joseph Nguyen

Every new starter at Nous gets a buddy when they start, who helps them navigate their new work environment and answers any questions that they have.

6.45 AM

I wake up, spend 5 to 10 minutes on my phone, make a smoothie, gussy myself up and leave the house to the bus stop. I've been making my smoothie and bringing it in rather than drinking it at home to save some time.

7.45 AM

I get to the bus stop.

8.30 AM

I start the day by checking emails and my to-do list for the day. I'm not fully ready to get stuck into the day and a colleague suggests we grab a coffee, so I easily oblige and we go to our local coffee shop.

 9.00 AM

For one of my projects, we have an 'immersion' session which is basically where the team get into a room to try and problem solve some of the information we've gathered so far, and decide how we will tackle the next deliverable. These sessions often involve a whiteboard, heavy discussion and sometimes post-it notes. The project I am working on is an Aboriginal Housing Strategy, so we come together to discuss how we will tackle the next deliverable (a report outlining best practice housing models).

10.00 AM

After the meeting, I get back to my desk and continue working on the deliverable with the new insights gained from the immersion session.

12.55 PM

I go to buy lunch with a colleague. I typically like grabbing lunch before 12 to beat the busy lunch queues, but I felt like I was on a roll with my work so didn't want to lose my momentum.

1.00 PM

We get back to the office to eat lunch - a daily Perth tradition we have is for those in the office to do the daily newspaper quiz together, with peak office traffic in the kitchen from 12-12:30pm. I'd say our average is a 4/10 which is quite high (my average contribution is probably 0.5/10). As we missed peak traffic, we score a lowly 2/10 today. After that we read out the day's horoscopes - I used to be a sceptic of the stars, but now I'm all in.

1.30 PM

I'm glad to have another solid block of working time where I can sit down and focus. This time can include a range of tasks, for example: conducting research, writing up findings and recommendations for a report, or preparing consultation materials for any consultations that we will run (such as a workshop or interview with key stakeholders).

I am on two projects right now, so I switch to working on my second project and start developing engagement materials for a workshop we have coming up. In this workshop, we want to gather insights from a range of different people to inform a report we are developing. My work today includes developing an agenda of what the session might look like, and developing pre-reading material that will be sent out to participants before the session.

3.30 PM

I now have a catch up with my ‘buddy’. Every new starter at Nous gets a buddy when they start, who helps them navigate their new work environment and answers any questions that they have. I’ve been at Nous for long enough now that they’ve trusted me to buddy a couple of new starters. There is not much on the agenda for this catch up, other than a general wellbeing check-in and an opportunity to give any advice.

4.00 PM

I get back from my buddy catch up and finalise what I was working on before.

5.30 PM

I head home from work and grab a bite to eat to prepare myself for.

7.00 PM

Mixed netball. Some of us in the Perth office started a mixed netball team last year who play every Tuesday evening. It is honestly great fun, and it is funny to see the competitive and uncoordinated side of people outside of a work context. Games can be as late as 10pm so our team is grateful that tonight’s game is at a respectable time.

8.15 PM

The team grab a small bite to eat together to take advantage of the earlier game time. We unfortunately lost the game tonight, so a little dinner and dessert is a good consolation prize.

9.30 PM

I get home and give in to watching a short episode of Netflix.

10.15 PM

I set my alarm and contemplate bringing leftover dinner for lunch tomorrow, but again decide that I will buy lunch.
