About Us

Every idea, every innovation, every little thing the world calls 'progress' begins with a first step, and someone willing to take it: explorers, inventors, entrepreneurs. Pioneers.

For nearly 150 years, Rio Tinto has been a company of pioneers –generations of people spanning the globe, all with the grit and vision to produce materials essential to human progress. Our iron ore has shaped skylines from Shanghai to Sydney. Our aluminium –the world's first to be certified "responsible" –helps planes fly and makes cars lighter. Our copper helps wind turbines power cities and our boron helps feed the world and explore the universe. Our diamonds help us celebrate the best parts of life.

My role changes as I am a graduate. If I am on site, I can expect to participate in the morning meetings, complete any actions that may arise from those meetings, and then get started on the improvement projects I am working on. Throughout the day, if there is a breakdown, we can be approached to provide technical support. Typically I will go into the plant at least once a day to do some inspections or investigate an issue.

Pros and cons of working at Rio Tinto

Pros

  • There are more possibilities for pathways than you can imagine… every semester you get to explore a different part of the business.

  • Every leader I've been assigned to has displayed that they want me to succeed as an individual.

  • The graduate program spans two years, during which you'll receive the training needed to perform your future role effectively.

  • The cultures instilled into the employees are Care, Courage, and Curiosity… we are cared for as individuals and our well-being is looked after.

  • Competitive pay and bonuses for this stage in my career… 4.5-9 months of parental leave and free private health insurance.

Cons

    • Some of the onboarding experience can be arduous, particularly for those unfamiliar with the processes involved.

    • Like all large companies, Rio Tinto is not exempt from internal politics.

    • Due to the size, communication can sometimes be an issue, and it’s easy to get lost in the crowd.

    • Perth office culture can be dull compared to the on-site culture.

    • On-site hours are long, with the usual 12-hour shifts.
