Management at Gilbert + Tobin

7.9
7.9 rating for Management, based on 82 reviews
How accessible are managers and do they make good mentors? You may want to address internal communication, performance feedback or praise and recognition.
There is a mentoring structure at G+T so you always have someone at the Partner or SC level who will meet with you regularly to discuss how you're tracking and any concerns you may have. Feedback is regular and consistent, the best training you'll get are from those around you. We receive training on how to approach positive and negative feedback and I feel like most people are very respectful and willing to be open.

Very approachable and they give good feedback including recognising late nights and good work. High workloads might make it difficult to get timely feedback however.

I am relatively pleased with my managers. Some take an active interest in your development and progression, others do not. Largely I have a good relationship with most managers. Typically our managers are accessible. We sit in open-plan desk format and you would usually have a partner in 1/2 seats next to you and available for discussion. Not every leader is a good mentor though. It takes seeking out the right mentor for you and your career and that may not necessarily be a partner.

Up and down. Some managers are great, however, I have also had experiences where I have felt unfairly treated.

The partners sit on the floor with the lawyers and are easily accessible. They often bring us into meetings with clients and ask our opinion on matters. The partners are all fantastic mentors and care a lot about the development of juniors

My managers are all good human beings who are open to having a chat and are honest. They try to support you as best they can and to improve themselves at the same time. You need to take initiative and go to them for feedback, recognition etc, but they will give it when asked.
Mid-level lawyer, Perth - 29 Aug 2024
We don't have managers the seniors need more management training if that's what this question is asking.
Graduate, Perth - 29 Aug 2024
It depends on who you work with, but most mid and senior lawyers are able to take the time to brief lawyers properly and provide plenty of resources to assist with a new task. I find that this is quite consistent across CCMR in particular.

It depends on the individual managers and the circumstances of the work environment. Managers are often under a lot of time pressure, so sometimes there is less focus from a manager level on team communication.

Great mentors who have created a culture where everyone is expected to teach and grow together. They are good at delegation, feedback, and easily approachable.

Due to the flat management structure, I find the managers to be very accessible and generous with their time. I believe they make good mentors.

My manager is quite busy so it can be difficult to get in contact.

I have a direct line of contact with my supervising partner who takes an active role in mentoring me and training me. We have sit down chats regularly about my development and progress, and constantly provides feedback.

My managers are very accessible and are great mentors. They are always easily approachable and happy to help or provide feedback
Junior Lawyer, Sydney - 26 Oct 2023
In this team there are Partners which are managers and I suppose the other juniors are also managers, as we only have one senior. I think the other juniors above me need management training as they often delegate Partner work but they need help to know how to do it effectively. The other juniors are operating at a level above their expected level of experience but I think they would benefit from leadership/management training given there is a gap not having seniors in the team.

My managers, mentors and task-providers are all approachable and encourage feedback. They are all pleasant, and welcome any means of internal communication, praise or recognition.

there is a good mentoring program and you have both a buddy and a mentor who help for different issues and you can ask for feedback on different levels

Don't have managers per se, structure of the firm is extremely flat which has its pros and cons
