Sustainability at Gilbert + Tobin

G+T is commited to environmental sustainability. For example, our GHG emissions have reduced by 54% between our FY2019 baseline and FY2023. G+T is also a Climate Active certified carbon-neutral organisation and service. The firm has undertaken SBTi net zero modelling and are developing an SBTi aligned net zero target and emissions reduction plan. The firm is committed further reducing its GHG emissions and will continue to report our progress through Climate Active and CDP.

Tries to implement best practice

Aside from the copious amounting of printing typically required from law firms, I believe there is a genuine push to be a sustainable practice.

I know they work do a lot of work on these areas but don't know too many specifics

I think we are trying but there is very little we can do given the stress under and speed at which we need to work. It would require serious systemic changes for anything to change on a firm-level.

Recycling is prevalent around the office, including efforts to limit printing.

Various initiatives at the firm and team levels such as keep cups and free coffees.

Disconnect between messaging re sustainability and ESG, and some really large mining companies as clients

I'm not really knowledgeable about G+T's sustainability efforts.

We have a lot of knowledge pieces but I think we should opt in to something like https://everclime.com/ (Ever clime) it is a Perth business that sets up companies with carbon/renewable projects. Ever clime allows a company to pick a project and donate to it to offset their carbon footprint it creates transparency though letting staff see what the company has done. For example, we could use Ever clime to offset all the firms travel emissions by donating to a project ot generate credits.

Separate bins for recyclables, compost/organic and landfill; lights are on sensor timers and will turn off when nobody is in the office

Unaware of any specific efforts in the Melbourne office.

Move to tap-only printing and active recycling

I understand the office is very highly rated when it comes to energy efficiency, and has a number of responsibilities as part of being in the Barangaroo precinct

The firm, and Barangaroo, places a big value on being green and reducing our footprint where possible. This does not negatively impact your daily work, but enables you to cycle or walk conveniently to the changing rooms, reuse mugs and glasses, and recycle appropriately at every turn

A very large amount of printing is done but there are initiatives and pushes to reduce printing and recycling bins in place. Unsure about power and utilities usage.

The Perth office has a 5-star energy rating, and the Sydney office has a 6-star rating (the maximum). We have a strong recycling system, and are encouraged to go paperless (i.e. avoid printing) whenever possible.
