The Sekisui House story

Since its inception in 1960, Sekisui House has built over 2,500,000 houses in cumulative total, earning the satisfaction of many customers both in Japan and abroad.

The history of Sekisui House started from one detached house. Today, our operations encompass a wide range of businesses, including rental housing, condominium construction, sale of subdivision lots and large-scale urban redevelopment, as well as community development across national and cultural borders.

In housing construction at Sekisui House, we always adhere to the principle of meeting the ever-changing needs of the times with our state-of-the-art technologies, while preserving the universal value of housing that remains constant over time.

This principle applies to all our homebuilding projects around the world. Our prowess in housing and environmental technologies is now highly regarded worldwide.

Culture & vibe

Opened on a site that spans 7,000m² in 1990, the Comprehensive Housing R&D Institute consists of an R&D center that is responsible for the development of architectural technologies, the evaluation of housing performance, and the proposal of new lifestyles; and the Nattoku Kobo Studio (Home Amenities Experience Studio) that explores ideal housing with input from residents.

Through R&D on both structural performance and comfortable living, the institute is helping to create better housing environments.

We have a fast-paced working environment and a very friendly corporate culture. To provide new value to our customers and society as a partner in creating happiness, it is important to establish an environment where employees can work happily and enthusiastically. We are implementing a human resources strategy based on three core measures to make Sekisui House the world’s happiest company.

We strengthened our recruiting capability during the COVID-19 pandemic by moving some interviews online and dividing internships into segments, among other measures. Social Contributions

We believe that "comfort of living" means having a comfortable environment, both indoor and outdoor. Under our ongoing environmental initiatives, we have been promoting eco-friendly homebuilding practices, while preserving the local environment and achieving the zero-emissions goal at our factories and construction sites in line with the Environmental Future Plan we announced in 1999. In recognition of our environmental efforts, we became the first company in the housing construction industry to be certified as an Eco-First Company* by the Japanese government. Here, we discuss our idea of "environment" in terms of four main aspects - nature, cultural/local heritage, resource recycling, and people/community.

* A Japanese program under which the "Eco-First Company" designation is given to companies that are committed to contributing to environmental preservation and are recognized by the Minister of the Environment as "leading the industry in environmental initiatives with advanced and unique activities".

The protection of the cycles of nature and ecosystems is essential for pleasant and comfortable living. Accordingly, we make it a rule to plant tree species that are suitable for local ecosystems as part of each homebuilding project under the principle of "three trees for birds and two for butterflies," which is at the core of our "Gohon no ki" (meaning "five trees") landscaping concept.

When creating home gardens, we select native and indigenous tree species that are beneficial to local living creatures as much as possible. Having secured a stable supply of such tree species, we work to communicate to our customers the joy of living in harmony with nature.

Controversies

In March 2018, there was a scam about the company that concerned 2,000 sq. meters in Tokyo's Gotanda area on which Sekisui House intended to build condominiums. The builder negotiated to buy the property from a middleman who claimed to have signed a tentative purchase agreement with the land's owner.
