Pros & Cons

  • There's a really diverse range of backgrounds, so there's always an opportunity to have interesting conversations. The work itself is challenging and fun.
  • The people. Everyone is highly motivated and super intelligent.
  • I've been given the freedom to work on projects I find particularly interesting. As I’ve improved, I’ve been given more responsibility and trust, and it’s rewarding to know that I contribute significantly to the company.
  • Working with some of the smartest and most driven people. Unique insight into an opaque industry. Very intellectual culture. Decent Work-Life-Balance for "high finance"
  • Collaborative environment, interesting work, flat work hierarchy, meritocracy, well compensated
  • Weird/late hours sometimes.
  • Steep learning curve, intense work and high expectations can be challenging.
  • Intense atmosphere sometimes causes stress
  • A bit of a steep learning curve because you need to learn so much so quickly

All meritocratic based, not time based. Promotions are awarded for consistent contribution to the firm, and ability to trade.

Culture
Everyone at Akuna is competitive, but not with each other. We see ourselves as one big team taking on the markets. Help is never far away and there are plenty of talented people from all departments who you can use as resources to help you out. It’s very easy to reach out to, and work with anyone at the firm. Juniors and seniors sit next to and work with each other at the office. Socialising after hours is easy, with regular meet-ups with our various clubs, like basketball, wine, and running club, as well as generally hanging out on Friday nights.

Diversity
Good racial diversity, not a whole lot of women but that is changing recently as we're seeing the proportion of women increase in the office.

My role is to constantly observe what’s happening in the market, and how our automated trading system is performing. I look at whether various parameters to our models need to be tweaked, and also think of ways to improve our setup. This could include having more visibility on various things, adding automation to manual tasks, conducting analysis on how we could better react to market events.

I'm in a fairly fortunate position where my manager is working on the same project as me. There is a lot of collaboration, and he has been very patient educating me.

Cereal and fruits in office. Showers available. Dress code is very informal, wear whatever you want

A few online quizzes, followed by a technical phone screen, then another harder technical phone screen followed by a behavioral interview. The Recruitment team is very helpful if you have questions.

Pay raises can be given without being promoted. Bonuses are dependent on the performance of the company as well as your individual performance. It is completely discretionary and management spends a lot of time deciding everyone's individual bonuses. This means it's a very opaque process, but allows them to compensate us in a very personalized way. People with the same title and years of experience may get drastically different bonuses. I haven't had an issue with the bonuses I've received.

Q&A sessions with two high up C++ devs every week for 5 weeks. They were essentially round tables where you could ask any challenges you faced and describe how things could be done better. This was a good way to make the 'senior' guys more 'accessible' as we knew them better on a personal level.

Work Hours

Work Hours
You are required to be at your desk during trading hours. Not much flexibility there. But no fixed required hours beyond that. Sometimes I feel motivated and stay back longer; sometimes I am tired and go home early. I am also scheduled to come in on some weekends. But it’s nice that Akuna will credit you a day of leave each day you are required to work on a weekend or public holiday.
