About the Program

From day one as a Coles graduate, you’ll feel the connection your work has to our purpose, to ‘sustainably feed all Australians to help them lead healthier, happier lives’, and be accountable for decisions that can make a meaningful difference to communities and our supply chains across Australia.

Our Store Support Centre (SSC), based in Hawthorn East in Melbourne, is the engine room of Coles Group and a dynamic and rewarding place to work.

Why become a Coles Graduate

At Coles we understand that when you’re included, trusted and supported by leaders that genuinely care, you can do your best work for the team feeling like you belong.

During the two-year program you’ll be working on real deliverables with clear ownership and accountability as you learn and grow through functional rotations, a tailored development program and a tight-knit support network. You’ll also have the opportunity to work in cross-functional groups to complete an Innovation Project, where the top teams present to our Executive team on a real business challenge.

We will support your passion and graduate journey with experiences and opportunities, with each rotation expanding your knowledge as you continue to discover Coles and yourself.

Discover our Retail and Consumer Products Function Options:

In our Agribusiness team, Graduates will develop a deep understanding of the Australian meat supply chain for Coles, working with farmers, processors, and retail packers to deliver exceptional livestock products. Seeing your products from paddock to plate is quite an experience and provides immediate responsibility and opportunities to make a difference to yourself, your Business Unit, and the overall customer experience. Regular projects include sustainability, packaging, supplier briefings, supplier visits, Christmas planning, new product strategy, compliance, and specification writing. All action from the get-go!

Our Buying and Trading team The Buying & Trading function is all about delivering the best market offering for our customers in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. As a Buying & Trading Graduate you will help determine the type, price, and the way a new product is launched across the hundreds of Coles’ retail outlets in Australia. No two days are the same as you will be working across multiple functions, including Marketing, Operations and Supply Chains to develop category plans and bring this to life in-store.

In the Coles Own Brand team, we spend our time eating, designing and developing great products to inspiring our customers.  We collaborate across the whole business, consulting central teams and subject matter experts, as well as with our suppliers in a ‘winning together’ way. As a Graduate part of the Coles Brand team, you will learn how to develop innovative and world-class products working with local and international suppliers and ensuring we meet our Quality and Sustainable commitments.

Pros and cons of working at Coles

Pros

  • Coles is extremely flexible and caters well to the cohort in the office.

  • There are many development and growth opportunities available to graduates to continuously improve and enhance their career.

  • Line managers and leaders are always willing to give you time to upskill and grow.

  • The flexibility of the role is a definite highlight, allowing me to not only thrive in my role but also put myself first.

  • The culture here is great and people are willing to help me when I ask.

Cons

    • Being such a large organisation can be daunting and learning how it operates to be able to complete your role can be frustrating at times.

    • The systems are a little outdated.

    • It's such a large business it can feel not very personable.

    • Of course, this is heavily influenced by the individuals that make up a respective intake of graduates, but there is great opportunity and breadth of graduates from different departments to be exposed to and build meaningful connections with.

    • Can be very fast paced and complicated to navigate such a large organisation.
