Pros & Cons

  • How seriously Coles takes their commitments to flexible working are. I'm encouraged to work where and when it suits me and which is extremely motivating.
  • I feel very supported as a graduate. The program is tailored to create an environment which fosters growth, learnings and gain professional skills that can be used in any industry
  • The diversity - we have amazing diversity in our team members, customers, and work that we do! There are not many workplaces where you can say you genuinely play a role in every Australian's life!
  • The fast-paced and dynamic work environment provides ample opportunity for networking, connecting, building your personal-brand and taking on new and different opportunities across the business.
  • Great work culture, very collaborative and supportive teams, recognition and appreciation of work, variety of challenging assignments
  • Varied opportunity, good exposure to the broader business, which will inevitably set you up to be a well-rounded/knowledgeable employee.
  • It has taken a while to adjust to the size and the way the company works as it is so fast-paced and there is a specific way that they do things.
  • There are a lot of people to navigate in the organization which can sometimes make things difficult to put plans into action
  • Workload/hours can be high at times
  • Steep learning curve (more of a challenge rather than a bad thing)
  • Location of offices not in the CBD
  • There are so many meetings! Big companies have a lot of people who need to be informed.

Career Prospects
Coles really prides in their graduates and seeks to maintain talent. Many people who have completed the program and are now in permanent roles speak fondly of the program and were so excited when we joined the team, stating they were once grads themselves. Sometimes grads have even left for another role after the program and then have come back to the company later on which is just a testament to Coles as an employer. It speaks well to our futures in the company.

Corporate Social Responsibility
Our company has implemented many programs which relate to each pillar in D&I, which demonstrate the company's responsibility to represent out workers and the community. I have personally worked on our partnership with Mentor Walks, and rolling out Welcome Here in our supermarkets.

Culture

Culture
In office is best described as business casual. It's inspiring to be surrounded by so many skilled professionals. It's even more inspiring that they are so accessible, there is virtually no hierarchy culture whatsoever. Being part of a grad cohort provides great opportunities for networking across multiple departments, which can be rare in organisations of this size. After hours socialising is always in full swing! As a grad cohort, we do big catchups semi-regularly but everyone also does drinks/dinners within their teams.

Office Work Environment
Big office space, with something always going on. Great facilities with an on-site mini supermarket, gym and coffee shops. We also regularly have celebrity chefs like Courtney Roulsten cooking up menu options in our hub. Dress for your day policy

Recruitment
The interview process and assessments were all completed virtually. It was a long, thorough process that challenged my thinking and presentation skills. It was insightful to see how Coles recruits new talent and also a great learning experience for me as well.

Salary
As a grad, the experience and opportunity is more valuable. That said Coles offer an incredible base salary and map out increases based on time and performance. They care about the talent they recruit and I definitely see that both in remuneration and investment of their time and energy.

Training
There is a lot of both formal and informal training offered at Coles. There is a whole platform "Learning Hub" dedicated to upskilling in different areas. The company has helped me attain 3 external certifications and also offered scholarships to a course through Coursera

Work Hours
I roughly work 35-40 hour weeks and usually finish earlier on Friday's. They support me with flexible working and there are no expectations for be to be in at a certain time and a certain number of days per week. I work in a way that best suits me and enjoy our weekly team day in office.
