My role as a graduate agronomist is to learn and assist my mentor agronomist. To develop my skills and knowledge base under an experienced agronomist. I check crops, I liaise with clients, and write recommendations whilst also helping with in-shop support.

I did a placement through my university and was offered to be kept on at the branch afterwards. I didn't go through a formal interview process like most people. My interview was 6 weeks’ worth of work placement.

Pay is higher than I was expecting for a role where my position was to learn and attend trainings for the first 2 years. As I started mid-way through the year I was not eligible for bonuses so cannot comment.

Training
I went on to graduate trips where seminars were held about personal development. We were taught about ourselves and what we should focus on throughout the year. We were also taught about how to be professional and deal with different types of customers. Throughout the year I have picked up numerous skills, I have improved my communication abilities in a professional environment, increased time management skills and other training such as excel and SAP (inventory system).

Work Hours
The office hours vary. Throughout the summer you will be spending a lot of hours in the branch if you are in a winter rainfall zone like I am (Yorke Peninsula). Throughout the season, most days we are out doing paddock inspections and interacting with farmers which is my favourite part of the job.
